Urban Preparedness Message from Survival Joe...
During both World Wars, millions of people in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom planted "Victory Gardens." In no time, Americans were producing 40 percent of their vegetables in their own backyard (about 10 million tons).
Feeding the troops put a major strain on the food system. And most farm laborers became enlisted soldiers. So governments encouraged people to grow their own. It quickly became a part of daily life.
But people didn't just stick to backyards. They were growing victory gardens on the rooftops of buildings, public parks (including San Francisco's Golden Gate Park). Even a vacant lot would be "commandeered by the war effort!" and transformed into a
cornfield or a squash patch.
I'm bringing this up to prove to you that you can survive off your own local gardening efforts. It's been done before. It'll probably be done again.
In fact, it may one day (soon) become the only way to survive.
Whether you'd love the idea of living off the land or not... I
believe every family needs to be PREPARED to do so. In Food Crisis
2: How to Prepare for a Long-Term Food Shortage I show how to get
ready so that if the food system fails you can start a survival
garden as soon as weather permits.
To get a copy of Food Crisis 2 or to find out more about what it
includes please go to: http://survivaljoe.net/foodcrisis2
At the link above, Survival Joe has included a stunning photo from 1943 of many backyard Victory Gardens. Check it out.
Don't be scared. Be prepared.

Why is there no looting amid Japan's disaster?
Amid the devastation of Japan's earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crises, there is an inspiring phenomenon - no looting.
"This is quite unusual," observes British journalist Ed West for London's The Daily Telegraph, "and it's unlikely it would be the case in Britain. During the 2007 floods in the West Country, abandoned cars were broken into and free packs of bottled water were stolen. There was looting in Chile after the earthquake last year - so much so that troops were sent in; in New Orleans, Hurricane Katrina saw looting on a shocking scale."
As Japan digs out, the landscape along the coast north of Tokyo looks like the aftermath of World War Two, observes West.
"Solidarity seems especially strong. Perhaps even more impressive than Japan's technological power is its social strength, with supermarkets cutting prices and vending machine owners giving out free drinks as people work together to survive.
"But most noticeably of all, there has been no looting, and I'm not the only one curious about this," writes West in his Telegraph blog. "Why do some cultures react to disaster by reverting to everyone for himself, but others - especially the Japanese - display altruism even in adversity?"
Do you have any ideas?
My Aunt Myrtle spent 50 years in Japan as a missionary I would like to think that’s one of the reasons.

Fresh Vegetable Spring Rolls
From Feeding the Whole Family by Cynthia Lair
Ingredients:
1 medium carrot
1 medium zucchini
2 lettuce leaves
1 medium ripe avocado
10 rice wrappers
juice of 1 medium lime
Directions:
1. Julienne or coarsely shred the carrot and zucchini. Thinly slice the lettuce and avocado.
2. Soak rice wrappers, one at a time, in a pie plate or cake pan filled with warm water for about 15 seconds or until they are softened but still firm to the touch. Lay on a hard flat surface.
3. Place a couple of avocado slice on the top third of each rice wrapper. Top with the rest of your veggies. Not too much, don't over-stuff them!
4. Squeeze 1/4 teaspoon of lime over the vegetables.
5. Working quickly, fold the edge closest to you over the filling and pull the filling in. Fold the sides toward the center, then roll closed. Repeat for remaining rice wrappers.
6. Place rolls in a dish, cover, and refrigerate until ready to serve.
Note: Experiment with any of your favorite organic veggies or add a protein for an extra energy boost!

Mobile Phone Radiation and Sugars
The Surprising Connections to Mobile Phone Radiation & Sugars
Smart Sugars Lesson # 10
by J. C. Spencer
There is a growing concern about the dangers of radio frequencies (RF) bombarding our bodies, especially our brains. An acquaintance did not want to hear about the dangers of electron radiation. Desiring to remain ignorant, he sarcastically told me, “Ignorance is bliss.” I responded, “You must be one happy dude.” The fact is that ignorance of RF may be very harmful.
One postulation is that cell phone electron radiation may cause slowed reflex time compounding the number of traffic fatalities. We know that attention distraction is a given but adding slower reflexes to the equation may increase the number of roadway injuries and deaths.
The Endowment for Medical Research in Houston will be conducting a series of studies to determine if certain sugars help form a protective barrier around human cells somewhat like a faraday cage. The idea that any sugar could possibly protect cells was recently discovered by researchers at the Université de Lausanne in Switzerland. They were surprised to learn that cells were protected from electron beam microscopy damage when those cells were coated with the sugar trehalose.
In February 2011 a new study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) shows that extended use of a cellular telephone causes increased glucose sugar activity in parts of the brain next to the phone's antenna. Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institute on Drug Abuse at the NIH and author of the cell phone paper, said there was significant increase in brain glucose metabolism in the area of the brain near the antenna. Glucose metabolism increase indicates conclusively that the human brain is sensitive to the electromagnetic radiation emitted from cell phones. Dr. Volkow confessed that we do not yet understand what is the mechanism that leads to this increase in glucose consumption. On a radio program she recently stated, “We interpret [the study] to mean that the brain is activated because that's what happens when [brain] cells are activated: They increase the consumption of gl ucose.” http://pubs.ama-assn.org/cgi/search?fulltext=cell+phone&submit.x=16&submit.y=6&submit=GO
Past studies have generated a lot of controversy and there needs to be more independent studies. Another study published in February 2011 in the journal Bioelectromagnetics reported no statistic-ally significant change in the incidence of brain cancers in men and women in England between 1998 and 2007, a time when cell phone use increased dramatically. Dr. Volkow asks, “Are there long-lasting consequences from exposure to these weak signals of electromagnetic radiation? I'd like to be able to answer that question in a way that it's comprehensive and provides information that is useful.”
A study with surprising results was led by University of South Florida researchers at the Florida Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (ADRC) and was published January 6, 2010 in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. This study conducted in mice provides the first evidence that long-term exposure to electromagnetic waves associated with cell phone use may actually protect against, and even reverse, Alzheimer's disease. It appears that the electron radiation actually prevented the protein plaque build-up on the neurons. http://health.usf.edu/byrd/adrc/related_alzheimers.htm
The Houston experimentation with cell phone RF will be conducted in the lab rather than in the human brain and may be instrumental in determining the parameters for future research with sugars and the human brain. We will report on these findings.

5 tbls of organic grated coconut, chopped to desired coarseness
3 tbls of any chopped nuts you like (optional)
3 tbls (to taste) of organic sweetener of your choice: honey, agave syrup, stevia, etc.
20 drops of constrained sea water. http://www.iherb.com/Trace-Minerals-Research-ConcenTrace-Trace-Mineral-Drops-8-fl-oz-237-ml/22265?utm_source=gb&utm_medium=f2

Energy expenditures resulted in a 13% increase in fatty acid
Energy expenditures were monitored for 15 men (average age 26) and 10 women (average age 32) as they alternated 12-hour periods in rooms heated to either 80 degrees or 60 degrees. The surprising finding: Exposure to 60-degree temperatures resulted in a 6% increase in calories burned without significant changes in physical activity. Moreover, exposure to lower temperature also resulted in a 13% increase in fatty acid levels in the blood, indicating that fat stores were being mobilized. http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20826525
